For the past few years I have been involved with the Home Awards that Stockton Beautiful honors prideful homeowners with. In a nutshell how the awards work is that we choose a neighborhood in Stockton and dispatch a committee of judges to examine the neighborhood. Upon a thorough inspection of the neighborhood the committee then chooses homes that exhibit an active interest in the homes visible presentation. The initial list is then scrutinized by another panel of judges that is chosen by the Stockton Beautiful executive board. The homes are judged on the use of color, tidiness of the landscape, stunning architectural design, and how well the home fits in with the ecosystem of the surrounding neighbors (meaning no white elephants).
The homes that make it past all the analysis that the panels of judges impose are then invited to a banquet in their honor, along with the community at large.
This year Stockton Beautiful chose the neighborhood south of Harding Way to Acacia, bordered on the west by Lincoln and on the east with Madison. This neighborhood proved to be a pretty good slice of old Stockton homes.
Stockton Beautiful really believes that through recognizing the little things that home owners do to ensure a beautiful residence, our City stands to benefit exponentially. Just think about the last time someone acknowledged anything that you had put your heart in. It probably pumped you up enough to continue to crush whatever it was that you were doing, only now with a renewed sense of energy. This is what we are trying to do.
And to make things even sweeter, we are doing this with no assistance from government, or bonds, or any other namby pamby grant that the community at large is actually paying for. This is done through the goodness of Stocktonians. Yes there is still hope in the epicenter of the mortgage fallout. Stockton’s grit and toughness will shine through.
Stockton Beautiful events are known for their success and attention to detail, but don’t come expecting this event to impress you. By no means will we offer a second rate spread. What I mean is that the extravagance of the event is not the star of the show. The homeowners are. You will walk away from this event utterly moved by the pride and achievement present on the faces of the homeowner honorees. It is a gem of an event for the true philanthropist.
Come and join the residents of this year’s honored neighborhood, the patrons of the Miracle Mile, Stockton Beautiful members and board, and me. We are holding the event at Matinee on the Miracle Mile (1825 Pacific Ave) at 5:30pm until 8:30pm Wednesday November 11th(aka Veterans Day). Hope to see you there.
Stay fresh and do good when you can.
